So here is the embarassingly untuned deck I played with, which is strictly a function of what cards I had around (and what cards I remember to ask Derek to bring for me):
R/G Fires
Land
6x Snow-Covered Forest
6x Snow-Covered Mountain
1x Snow-Covered Plains
2x Forest
3x Evolving Wilds
4x Terramorphic Expanse
Creatures
4x Kird Ape
4x Wild Nacatl
4x Llanowar Elves
4x Keldon Marauders
4x Horned Kavu
4x Blastoderm
1x Flametongue Kavu
4x Gathan Raiders
Other
4x Fires of Yavimaya
4x Skred
1x Lightning Bolt
I liked the idea of Fires, but also wanted to do something stupid, and putting Skred in as removal seemed like the thing to do. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough Snow-Covered Forests to fit the bill, so two normals had to go in too. Luckily, they were illustrated by John Avon (Invasion art, if you're wondering), so they were almost as good. The single Lightning Bolt was because I had one slot left at the end and my removal was looking pretty thin.
Probably shoulda written match results last night before I forgot most of it. Here's what I do have.
Round 1 vs Ryan playing B/W Extort
Game 1--I mulled to 5, which sucked. He played a bunch of little guys and started extorting me a lot while I drew approximately 10,000 forests. I eventually started drawing some guys, but he had enough dudes to chump with and enough of a lead that it was way too late, especially when he was extorting 4x on some spells.
Game 2--I had a better start and beat him up with some Blastoderms while killing his extort dorks early. Blastoderm is REALLY good with Fires. Feels weird killing the other guy's stuff on my turn, but it prevented more extortions. Ended up winning.
Game 3--I don't remember how this went, but I won this one. I think he got stuck on two swamps for a while, and then still couldn't find any white. By the time he got on his feel it was a bit too late.
I win 2-1, total record 1-0
Round 2 vs Ed playing Burn
I don't remember specifically how these individual games went. He seemed to rely on Chandra's Spitfire getting over my head (which it often did, as I have no fliers) and throwing a whole bunch of burn at my face, essentially doubling the effectiveness of his burn if the Spitfire hit. Pretty much boiled down to whether or not I had the Skred to kill his Spitfire after he pumped it up with two burn spells or not. I guess I had those two of the three games. I think this deck really needs more removal in general.
I win 2-1, total record 2-0
Round 3 vs Alex playing my deck sans green
He played Pyrokinesis at one point, which was kind of awesome. Blastoderm was a champ here, as he couldn't get hit, which was great. In other sadder news, I think I had the sequence of Blastoderm dies during upkeep-->draw Horned Kavu happen two or three times in this match, which is heartbreaking. Raiders were really really average, Marauders were awesome, especially with Fires.
I win 2-1, total record 3-0
Overall impressions:
--Keldon Marauders were awesome, great on their own, and combined with either Fires or Horned Kavu (or both!!!111!) they're amazing.
--Blastoderm is as good as it ever was.
--Skred seemed to do alright. I don't know if it's a better choice than Bolt, but it was always doing as much damage as it needed to do to kill the guys on the board, even late game. Not being able to throw it at the opponent's dome is sort of annoying, but I never needed it either. That said, it functions pretty much the same as Bolt until turn 3-4, maybe playing 2-3 Skred and 2-3 Bolts is the better way to go, since Skred is only really BETTER than bolt at killing creatures late game, but late game it should be awesome, as red definitely always had a harder time killing bigger guys otherwise.
--Given how many guys I have in the deck, it seems like 4x Horned Kavu should be fine, but the number of times I was sitting on only HK in my hand with no other guys on the board was definitely greater than zero. Might try going down to 3x.
--I don't think this deck is aggressive enough to be playing Raiders, I'm not emptying my hand fast enough. Most of the time these guys were just 3/3s that cost me two cards to get. I think swapping out the Llanowar Elves for Arbor Elves will allow trading out these guys for Imperiosaur, which I like the sound of.
