Magic is about as diverse as a Brooklyn taxi cab's back seat. You can play formats ranging from the very new ("Holy crap!" [windmill slamming Jiwari]) to the very, very old ("... so, forty Storm, right?"). Most of them are expensive. As savvy consumers, we can't fault the game's designers for encouraging that - they make money, which leads to them making more cards, which in a way keeps me from buying heroin - but we can't all spend money on the game like we could when we were younger.
Enter Andrew Dale.
A notoriously frugal bloke who likes the attack step, black cards, and weenies (hee-hee), Andrew Dale approached me with an idea. Would I, he asked, be interested in playing a new format with him? It's cheap, and you can't play rares (or these new things called "Mythic Rares").
Yes. Yes, I would.
Here are the rules of Peasant Magic:
1. It isn't Pauper Magic. In Pauper, you can't play uncommons. In Peasant Magic, you can. You can play five of them.
2. No, not any five. Force of Will, you will recall, was uncommon in Alliances. The limit is that each card must sell for less than $5.00 on Star City Games (www.starcitygames.com) in NM/M condition to be in your deck.
3. The lowest rarity counts. So, if something was printed at common in Alpha, but has been rare since then, the Alpha rarity (common) is the one we go with. So, for example, if you had Battle Screech (uncommon in Judgment), you can play it, because it was reprinted in Vintage Masters (an online only set) at common.
4. There is a banned list. Ours is based on one developed by a community in Groningen, The Netherlands. Yes, we're globetrotters. The list is based on two things: Fairness of a card and Fun of a card. Remember, this is still a game, and games are fun. Remember? Derek?
Banned List
Bazaar of Baghdad
Brain Freeze
Cranial Plating
Demonic Consultation
Empty the Warrens
Frantic Search
Invigorate
Jeweled Bird
Library of Alexandria
Mana Drain
Skullclamp
Sol Ring
Strip Mine
Tendrils of Agony
Thopter Foundry
Hope you love the format and the forum. Take time and share your ideas.
